I am Marieke, illustrator, researcher, and physician. My illustrations focus on medical-scientific topics, particularly in the field of psychology and psychiatry. In my illustrations, I combine my scientific background and fascination for human motivations, with my love for art and illustration.
Medical, scientific, and educational illustrations
As a physician and illustrator with experience in anatomy education and a background as a scientific researcher, I enjoy collaborating with researchers, educators, and physicians to create medical-scientific and educational illustrations that effectively convey their message. My focus is on presenting the information clearly, beautifully, and accurately in a manner that resonates with the target audience.
Editorial illustration and illustrations related to psychology and psychotherapy
My work outside of medical-scientific illustrations primarily revolves around recognisability, the rough edges of human existence, atmosphere, and expression. I'm happy to assist you with (editorial) illustrations for stories and themes where you want to highlight the human figure and experience, themes related to mental health and psychotherapy, and in designing visual aids and educational materials for psychotherapy.
Portrait drawings and portrait illustrations
I have a profound passion for portrait drawing. Portraits serve as an ideal medium for conveying a story or message. My objective is not to idealise or produce a hyperrealistic replica of a subject, but rather to capture the vulnerability and uniqueness of a person, creating a powerful image. I have previously crafted a series of portraits themed around 'the frayed edges of life,' where I captured individuals in intimate and vulnerable moments just after waking up, before assuming the roles of daily life.
